NURA: return to country

131 years post-invasion, many of us are at a great distance from country. I returned to country, and brought three minutes of it back.

‘Nura’, meaning ‘country’ in my Dhurga language was conceived as a result of the realisation that while I’m fully immersed within my indigeneity, I also am at a great distance from my roots. Like many other First Nations people, myself and my family have been part of a diasporic shift post-colonisation, and have been affected greatly by different undertakings of genocide. This short moment in an 80,000 year history has completely changed the ways of life of Indigenous Australians, yet it is something that often goes forgotten, or isn’t brought to light. Therefore, ‘Nura’ became a way to bring three small pieces of my nation, Yuin, to Eora and Darug lands, so as to challenge the monolithic structure that Indigenous nations are often reduced to, and bring a part of me that lives 120kms away, to my new home.
